John Cameron, Captain, U.S. Coast Guard (Retired), Executive Director, Charleston Branch Pilots Association, President, Tradeworthy, Inc.

Throughout his career in the United States Coast Guard and private business, Captain Cameron has continually focused on the safety and efficiency of marine commerce.  He combines engineering expertise in ship systems and structures, and business management experience in port services and marine consulting.

Captain Cameron’s Coast Guard assignments began with shipboard engineering duty and advanced to regional command leading search and rescue, marine environmental protection, ship safety regulation, merchant mariner licensing, port safety and security, and federal maritime law enforcement.  His last assignment prior to retiring was Sector Commander and Captain of the Port, Charleston where he was responsible for all Coast Guard Operations throughout South Carolina and Georgia.  He had also led Marine Safety Operations for the Port of New York, and on 9/11 was assigned to the New York City Mayor’s staff to coordinate port security and marine operations.  During the Iran-Iraq War, Cameron was a supervisory inspector for the Kuwaiti National Oil Tanker Fleet.  He also commanded the Coast Guard’s Salvage and Emergency Response Team, directing vessel recovery from major shipping accidents.

As Executive Director of the Charleston Branch Pilots, Cameron now directs daily harbor pilot operations for all international marine trade through the Port of Charleston, and manages relations with congressional delegations, federal regulatory agencies, state commissions, shipping lines, port authorities, national trade associations, media, and other marine industries.

As president and founder of TradeWorthy, Captain Cameron offers marine safety, security, and operational risk management services, and admiralty expert witness services.  He authored port security plans for U.S. ports in accordance with international and federal standards.  He is appointed to one South Carolina State Commission and serves as a consultant to two others.

Cameron holds a BS in Marine Engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy, and MSE’s in Aerospace Engineering and Naval Architecture from the University of Michigan.
