Largo, FL –Alakai Defense Systems, Inc. is proud to announce that it’s man-portable, long-range, eye-safe explosives detection system, PRIED, has been nominated as a finalist by SPIE, (The International Society for Optics and Photonics) for the 2016 PRISM Awards. The gala event, referred to as the “Oscars of Photonics” is an annual occasion held during the SPIE Photonics West (Silicon Valley) being held this year in San Francisco on February 17th. The other two finalists in this international competition in the Detector & Sensor category are from much larger companies in Japan and Finland.
The Alakai PRIED (Portable Raman Improvised Explosive Detector) is a long-range Raman sensor in a streamlined portable backpack/wand design that uses laser technology to safely identify explosive substances. Lethal chemical threats such as those used by ISIS, narcotics, and hazardous wastes can also be detected without touching the threat. The system incorporates the Alakai patented eye-safety subsystem, and is 100% eye-safe to the public, unlike many portable chemical sensors sold.
According to Rob Waterbury, Director of Engineering for Alakai, and development leader for PRIED “succeeding in getting this large a leap in capability over the state of the art was hard. More amazing to us; however, was that the very first prototype is useable by soldiers and first responders who are asking when can they get one”.
“The weapon of choice of terrorists here and abroad is explosives. We are very honored to have been selected as a finalist this year by SPIE, recognizing our technological contribution to protecting the heroes that protect us here and globally “ states Ed Dottery, Alakai’s Founder and CEO.
